Siemens, s.r.o branch plant Elektromotory Frenštát is a major manufacturer of low-voltage and synchronous electric motors for pumps, compressors and air conditioning equipment.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

On the basis of the analyses, it was decided to use voice technology, the suitability of which was also demonstrated to the representatives of Siemens Frenštát during a reference visit to the company. JLC COOP Dunajská Streda, where the voice solution has already been implemented. Our sister company KODYS, spol. s. r. o. with Honeywell Voice solution was selected to supply the voice technology.

KODYS, spol. s. r. o. then implemented the Honeywell Voice solution using voice recognition for the purpose of production warehouses in Siemens. The principle of voice picking is that the tasks that the warehouse operator performs can be performed in parallel using this technology - i.e. he manipulates the goods, detects the data and at the same time records other data. So he doesn't have to keep picking up and then putting down a receipt or mobile terminal. The voice terminal is attached to the belt (or trolley) and the warehouse operator communicates with the system using voice via the headset and microphone in the headset, so he can concentrate on the actual handling of the components.

The Siemens semi-finished goods warehouse in Frenštát stores components for the final assembly of the electric motors. The solution covers the stacking process (from receiving to the semi-finished goods warehouse) and the process of picking for production, which take place in 2 steps. The forklift operators first take out the components for production and stack them on the handling areas. The warehouse operators then pick the individual components onto the trolleys according to the assembly orders. They use headsets to communicate with the system - receiving instructions on the next items to be picked and then confirming what has been done by voice into a microphone. Furthermore, voice technology is used to load the items back into the warehouse.

For use on forklifts, VMT (Vehicle Mounted Talkman) technology was chosen - the voice terminal is mounted on the structure of the forklift and the operator has a Vocollect Bluetooth headset connected to the terminal. The voice solution is further complemented by Motorola LS3578 handheld sensors, which are used to sense pallet number and stock position. RW420 mobile printers with Wi-Fi connectivity are used on forklifts to mark individual pieces being removed from pallets.

What is also interesting about the project itself is the relatively short implementation time - from the signing of the contract to the handover of the work to the test plant, 3 months elapsed.

Siemense Frenštát set the goal of streamlining the process of picking material for the assembly lines and optimum use of the workforce of warehouse operators. This was also linked to the intention of eliminating the work with paper documentation.

Siemens Frenštát employees evaluate the entire solution positively. "One of the biggest advantages of the solution is that the workers have both hands free and can use them only for material handling, which greatly speeds up the process. A number of activities were automated as part of the project. Not only has voice technology been used, but we have eliminated a number of manual activities: for example, the lengthy preparation of paper documentation."
